The qualifications to serve as Chaplains in health-related settings can vary greatly. While the VA has the most definitive guidelines and requires a high degree of training, many public and private hospitals, and hospice organizatons, have established their own requirements ranging from "simply ordained" to specific education requirements. If the agency for whom you will be working requires ecclesiastical endorsement (and you are CANA clergy), then that endorsement will come from the Deanery for the Chaplaincy.

General Requirements to serve as
a Chaplain in the health related areas...

  1. Ordained and/or licensed to minister with CANA.

  2. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  3. A graduate degree to include a minimum of 72 semester hours (or equivalent) from a qualifying (accredited) institution. (M.Div, MTS, M.Theo, etc.)
  4. Not less than 36 hours must be in theological/ministry and related studies.
  5. General requirements (not an all inclusive list) to serve as a Health Profession Chaplain...(For the VA) Completion of Basic I and II Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) in order to apply for a vocational chaplain position. Visit the ACPE website for more information.
  • (All Chaplains) Must complete three (3) hours of Continuing Education related to your position each Calendar year. Verification is due to the Deanery by December 15th.
  • (For Hospital Chaplains) A minimum of 9 practicum/clinical hours related to the hospital chaplain role at the graduate level in conjunction with an advanced degree is desired. Completion of an applicable certification program from the International Critical Incident Stress Management Foundation (ICISF) or completion of CPE Basic level I and II should be completed within four years of initial endorsement as a Hospital Chaplain.

Non-vocational (volunteer) Health-related Chaplains may also receive endorsement...
